On Tuesday 12th September, Joseph Banks Secondary College had our third annual Interhouse Athletics Carnival.
There was a huge weight of self-inflicted expectation on Ornata house, after House Leader Mr Piggott’s bold declaration at a previous assembly that “the Ornata train was coming into the station”. Mr Piggott had every reason to be confident, with Ornata having taken out 3 of the 4 previous Interhouse Carnivals across Athletics and Swimming.
Formosa was unusually confident going into the carnival, with a strong cohort of Year 7 boys giving them the early lead in the pre-carnival 800m and 1500m events.
Defending champions Serrata were quietly confident, with strong competitors in the senior years of their team to be their main hope for retaining the Athletics title.
The unknown quantity was Incana, who are always thereabouts but not quite strong enough to take out the title in previous years. Some strong Year 10 competitors including Kayla Going, Madi Jeffery Ben Heaney and Alex La Thornton were ready to help Mr Muirhead get the title for Incana this year.
The day started with the 100m events, with the Year 10’s kicking off proceedings. The first results of the day saw Josh Pedersen retain his 100m crown, with Keelie Dawes taking out the Year 10 girls event. The field events began at the same time, with the qualifiers for these events beginning in strong fashion.
The 400m events followed the 100m event, with our middle distance runners coming to the fore during this period. It was great to move around the ovals and witness some of the successes students were having, especially young Declan Wagner from Year 7, who began to look very intimidating with the amount of ribbons pinned to his chest.
The final event before the relay section of the day was the 200m event. The weather for the day was picking up beautifully by this time, and with the wind dropping it made it easier for all competitors to navigate the first bend. Students from each year group were now eagerly discussing the update in House points, with Incana the underdog swapping leads with Formosa, with defending champs Serrata and the Ornata train well behind.
After the disaster of the weather halting proceedings in 2016, the weather was near perfect for the relay section of the 2017 edition. House Leaders had prepared their teams ready to go for the relay events, which were to prove crucial in determining the winning house. A large majority of students watched on from the side of the track, as our top competitors raced off to finish the day.
A new addition to the Athletics Carnival this year was the staff vs students relay. The top male and female from each year group in each house (8 students), were to compete in a relay event against 1 8 staff member team. Little did we know that the competitive spirit of our staff came out, with the staff entering TWO teams! It was great to see our staff showing the enthusiasm and dedication that they are known for. It was unfortunate that neither of those staff teams won!
Finally it came time to present our individual champions and runners-up for each year group and gender. Each of the students listed below are worthy winners of their respective awards, and should be very proud of their accomplishments. All students and staff then held their collective breath as the placings for Houses were announced. The Ornata train was derailed, the defending champs were vanquished, the bright orange Formosa team couldn’t quite get the job done, as the spirited and well-led Incana house were victorious. This was much to the joy of House captains Alex La-Thornton and Madi Jeffery, as well as House leader Mr Muirhead, as they graced the JBSC community with a humble victory speech.
This years’ carnival could not have been as successful as it was without the support of the wonderful staff at JBSC. All members of the HPE team worked extremely hard to ensure that the event would run smoothly with a high level of organisation required in preparation. A big thank you must go to all staff that assisted with this.
Congratulations again to Incana and all of our individual champions, watch this space for announcements for the SSWA Track & Field Interschool team for Tuesday 24th October.
