Thank you for choosing Joseph Banks Secondary College for your child’s secondary education. Whether you are a new or existing family we are confident that as a school community we will provide multiple opportunities for your child to achieve success in an innovative learning environment.

In preparation for the coming school year, the information below will assist in the transition of your child to the next year of school. In the interest of sustainability, hard copies will not be posted home. We do have a number of printed copies in the office, so you are welcome to come into Main Reception if you would like a copy.

Please note that due to the replacement and maintenance of refrigerated air-conditioning units, Joseph Banks Secondary College will close on Friday 18 December 2020 at 4.00pm and will reopen on Monday 25 January 2021 at 8.00am. Office hours when we reopen are Monday to Friday 8.00am to 4.00pm. If you have any queries, please contact the College on 9303 7400.

Start of the School Year 2021

The first day of school for students is Monday 1 February 2021.

Year 7 Students should assemble at the front of The Grove Gymnasium at 8:45am. Once school commences, students will be invited into the Gymnasium for a brief assembly before being directed into class groups. Parents and guardians are welcome to attend this assembly.

New Middle School or Senior School students should report to the either the Middle School or Senior School Reception to receive their timetable and be introduced to their community.

Existing students should report to their period 1 class, as per their timetable on SEQTA.

Stationery List 2021

The resources required for 2021 are available to purchase from Campion Education and using the access code ‘3RYR’.

Please ensure you order online before Friday, 11 December 2020 to ensure your books are delivered before the start of the school year.

If you would prefer to post your order to Campion, please download the Resource List from below. complete and post to:  Campion, 751 Marshall Road, Malaga WA 6090.  Please ensure you allow plenty of time for delivery of your order due to the recent changes made by Australia Post and keep a copy of your order as the original will be retained by Campion.

                                                              Contribution and Charges

                                                              Your 2021 Contributions and Charges Statements will be mailed in the week commencing Monday 23 November 2020. Please note they have been mailed out in year groups, so you may not receive all your children’s statements at once (if you have multiple children in different year groups).

                                                              As per Government policy, all students are able to access an education program that satisfies the requirements of the curriculum and is within the prescribed maximum voluntary contribution limit of $235.

                                                              The Contributions and Charges that parents/guardians pay is used by the school to fund the cost of materials and services directly used by students. The success of our programs across all Learning Areas is directly related to the equipment and resources that we can afford to incorporate into the teaching and learning opportunities we provide. Specialised programs are high cost options and attract compulsory charges.

                                                              Secondary Assistance Scheme/ABSTUDY Supplement Information

                                                              The Western Australian Department of Education provides an allowance to assist eligible families with secondary schooling costs.

                                                              Parents/guardians must apply for each school year (annually) – applications do not carry forward to future years.

                                                                                          In Accordance with the School Education Act 1999, Joseph Banks Secondary College must provide information to parents/guardians that include a maximum estimate of anticipated additional costs for students before the beginning of the school year. Please be aware that these services, facilities and activities are not confirmed and may not occur during the school year. Payment for these will be requested at the time they occur.

                                                                                                                                                                Mobile Phone Policy

                                                                                                                                                                In 2019, the State Government announced a new Student Mobile Phones in Public Schools policy to take effect from the start of Term 1, 2020. The policy requires all public schools to implement a ban on the use of mobile phones for all students from the time they arrive at school to the end of the school day. This extends to the use of smart watches which need to be on airplane mode during this period. The policy aims to reduce distractions in class and improve student engagement.

                                                                                                                                                                In the policy, secondary students are allowed to have their phones in their possession, but must turn them off and keep them out of sight until the end of school. Exceptions are allowed for students who have approval from their Leading Teacher to use a phone to monitor health conditions, or where teachers give students permission to use mobile phones for a specific purpose.

                                                                                                                                                                If your child needs to contact you, they can do so through their Learning Community or Main Reception.                                                                                                                                                                 Information and Communication Technology – New Students commencing in 2021

                                                                                                                                                                To prepare your child’s iPad for access to the College WiFi, please deliver your iPad to the IT Service Desk, preferably prior to the commencement of Term 1, 2021.

                                                                                                                                                                Parents are welcome to drop their iPad off to Main Reception before the end of school year, however they must ensure they are collected before 17 December 2020, otherwise they will be stored onsite, securely, over the school holidays. iPads can be delivered to the College’s Main Reception from Monday 25 January 2021 between 8am and 4pm or at any of the following times:

                                                                                                                                                                Due to the volume of iPads that will need to be processed by the IT Service Desk, it may take up to one week for your iPad to be configured and you will be contacted once the iPad is ready to be picked up. The Operating System on the iPad may need to be updated or reinstalled by the IT Service Desk.

                                                                                                                                                                                    SmartRider cards are the only form of student photographic ID, it is used as a travel card for Transperth services, a library card at the College and a concession card at various venues.

                                                                                                                                                                                    Year 7 students will have their photo taken in the first week of school to get their complimentary first SmartRider. New students in other years are also eligible for a new SmartRider, they just have to go to Main Reception to place an order. All replacement SmartRiders cost $5 and can be ordered at Main Reception.                                                                                                                                                                                     The last day to purchase uniform on site will be Thursday 26 November from 8:00am to 10:30am.
