This exciting course centres on the practices of photography and film. Students will focus on the practical aspects of photography and film and will gain the skills and knowledge to build a portfolio of their work. They will be able to work comfortably with both types of media and will gain valuable skills needed to work independently in the studio.

Focusing on the “decisive moment”, students will investigate what makes a good photograph. By taking class-based workshops the students will learn technical elements of how a DSLR camera works, the main principles of composition, lighting, and in-camera editing. Students will create a general portfolio covering portrait, landscape (architectural), fashion, still-life, sports, fine art, abstract, commercial, long exposure and food photography. Upon completion the students will have the opportunity to create a specialist portfolio in their chosen genre.

In Film, students focus will be on the conventions of non-fiction film/video. Students will watch, analyse, and investigate how a documentary and news program is constructed. Students will use a wide range of audio-visual equipment to produce their own news cast and short documentary. Upon completion students will have an understanding and appreciation of the way 21st century media can be used to persuade the way we think.
